A comfortable home for the new addition to the family
Thanks to a growing family, the home of the clients also had to grow; with our help, all the family's wishes could be brought under one roof.
When their third daughter was born, the couple realized that space was becoming tight in their 5.5-room detached house. Furthermore, the rooms were spread across three floors. Therefore, they decided to have a house built to their exact specifications. "Our old house was very traditional – with a gable roof," the homeowner recalls. The new house, on the other hand, was to be modern. The couple learned about us through an advertising brochure and were immediately impressed. "The houses from Atmoshaus inspired me," says the homeowner.
Based on our house ideas, the clients worked with us to design their own project. "This isn't a house you'd find in a catalog," reveals the homeowner. "It was individually designed for us."
The modern flat-roofed house with a garden is located in a quiet residential area in Leimental, Solothurn, on the border with Basel-Landschaft. The location was crucial in choosing the plot. "We have a direct tram connection to Basel – every 5.5 minutes." The yellow facade was also a request from the clients. "You see white everywhere," says the homeowner. "That's why we initially considered a deep burgundy." However, a dark-plastered facade is more prone to cracking over time, as the dark color is exposed to greater temperature fluctuations. Therefore, the clients ultimately opted for a vibrant yellow.
Inside the house, the family opted for understated colors. White and neutral gray tones predominate in the interior design, which the owners themselves oversaw. The floor in the open-plan living and dining area is laid with easy-care porcelain stoneware tiles. A gray-painted wall lends the living room a cozy feel, while the large corner window lets in plenty of natural light and provides access to the garden, complete with a lounge area and whirlpool.
The highlight of the ground floor, however, is the spacious kitchen. A long peninsula houses the sink and the cooking area with a Miele cooktop and extractor hood, as well as the breakfast bar. The kitchen counter opposite offers additional storage space and room for a Bauknecht combination steamer and combination microwave. "This duo is practical," says the homeowner. "It gives me two ovens, but also a microwave and a steamer when I need them." A narrow window between the island and the kitchen counter brings additional light into the room. The kitchen's standout feature, however, is its materiality: both the high-gloss gray fronts and the matte white countertop are made of glass. Besides the kitchen and living room, the ground floor also houses a guest toilet and a practical pantry. Further storage space is located in the basement, along with the laundry room, the utility room, and a guest room that occasionally serves as an office for the parents and a media room for the children.
The family's four bedrooms are located on the upper floor. Laminate flooring provides warmth and is easy to clean and replaceable once all three children have grown up. The three equally sized children's bedrooms share a bathroom with a shower, bathtub, and bidet. The master bedroom has its own bathroom with a shower and a roof terrace overlooking the garden. The children's bathroom is decorated in shades of gray, while the master bathroom features earth tones. The vanity units were handcrafted by the family's skilled craftsman.
With their new home and with us as the general contractor, the clients are happy and enjoy their new home most of all in the living and dining area – except in summer, when family life shifts completely outdoors.
